Be precise about the drive stream

Mechanical hard disk drives and solid-state drives are different categories. Lifecycle Pickups’ initial drive focus is mechanical HDDs. An SSD lot should be identified separately and reviewed as its own opportunity rather than included under an assumed HDD acceptance agreement.

The same care applies to condition. Intact, boardless, bent or degaussed describes aspects of a lot; those labels do not, by themselves, establish the documentation or data-handling result required for your project.

Discuss the data requirement before the shipment

NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2, published in September 2025, provides guidance for a media sanitization program. It supersedes Revision 1. Selecting an appropriate process depends on the media and the information-protection requirements; it is not settled by deciding where to sell a lot. Source: NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2.

This page does not prescribe a sanitization method or certify a result. Involve your responsible data-security team and confirm the applicable ILS service before material is released.

Questions worth answering in writing

  1. What data-related work, if any, has already been performed, and what records support that statement?
  2. What data handling must occur before release, in transit or at the receiving operation?
  3. Who is responsible for each part of the agreed process?
  4. What custody and completion documentation does your customer or organization require?
  5. Does the proposed receiving facility and service cover those requirements?
  6. How will unexpected devices, mixed media or missing records be handled?

These questions help separate commercial fit from data-security obligations. They are not a substitute for your organization’s policy, applicable requirements or project-specific professional advice.

Share enough to qualify the material—without sharing the data

For the first conversation, Alex needs a description of the stream, approximate volume, city/state, physical condition and a high-level statement of documentation needs. He does not need confidential customer records or the contents of a device in the public form or chat.

If photos include customer names, asset-owner information or sensitive identifiers, prepare a non-sensitive version first. Ask Alex how to exchange any necessary project documentation appropriately. Agree on the next step before packing, dispatching or treating a purchase inquiry as approval to ship.
